Utopai Studios partners with DeNA to embed AI storytelling tool in Japanese animation production

Utopai Studios and DeNA Co., Ltd. announced a joint venture that will incorporate Utopai’s storytelling AI system, PAI, into DeNA’s experimental animation workflows in Japan. The arrangement places Utopai AI production experts alongside DeNA’s Entertainment Development Business Unit, contributing to early visual concepts, character and environment design, and scene planning, while DeNA’s artists keep final say over narrative, visual style, performance and tone.

PAI, which already supports long-form content pipelines for Huace Film & TV in China and various film and TV projects in the United States and across Europe, North America and Asia, is built to preserve approved assets throughout a series, reducing the need to recreate elements for each shot. The collaboration will operate under jointly negotiated rules covering permissions, intellectual property and security, with the AI system initially limited to the evaluation phase. Both firms see the effort as a step toward more efficient production while maintaining the artistry that defines high-quality animation, aiming to strengthen Japan’s global anime competitiveness.
