Uttar Pradesh election chief orders purge of duplicate voter ID cards

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer confirmed that submitting multiple applications can create duplicate EPICs and directed officials to remove them before the draft roll is published.

Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Electoral Officer stated that repeated voter applications can lead to the issuance of multiple EPICs and that the election roll is regularly cleaned through the ECINET platform. In response to a fact-check claim about a missing name and multiple IDs, the office confirmed the possibility but disputed the specific example. The CEO convened a virtual session with district registration officers to focus on eliminating duplicate entries identified during the Special Intensive Revision.

He ordered Booth Level Officers to flag such cases and to complete Form-7 filings promptly, targeting a pure draft electoral roll for publication on 12 November, 2026. Additionally, he urged a broad outreach campaign to register eligible citizens still absent from the roll.

Why it matters

Ensuring accurate voter lists is crucial for fair elections and prevents fraud or disenfranchisement.
