Valencian schools close and transport halted as red rain alert triggers floods
Over 60 municipalities in the Valencian Community have suspended school classes and major transport routes amid a red rain alert and flooding.
Sixty-eight municipalities across the Valencian Community announced the suspension of school activities on Monday, impacting a large number of students, particularly those in Valencia city neighborhoods and zones that suffered severe flooding in October 2024. The red rain warning prompted Adif to halt commuter rail lines C1 and C2 linking Valencia North station with the southern province, and the Generalitat Valenciana ordered the closure of about twenty inter-municipal roads in the Safor, Marina Alta, Ribera Alta and parts of l'Horta Sud due to flooding and landslides.
The Directorate General of Traffic cancelled all driving-theory and practical exams scheduled for the day. University campuses in Gandia and Ontinyent entered emergency level 3, moving all teaching online, while the Gandia campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València also closed. Judicial activities in Gandia were suspended by the president of the local court to avoid safety risks. Several supermarkets in the affected areas delayed opening until midday, and the cooperative Consum adjusted its opening protocols following the 2024 flood experience.
Why it matters
The closures disrupt education, transport and public services for thousands, highlighting the severity of one outlet flood emergency in Valencia.
