Valterra Platinum anticipates surge in demand from China's hydrogen truck push
Valterra Platinum says China's move toward hydrogen-fuelled freight trucks could trigger a massive increase in platinum group metal demand.
Valterra Platinum, the planet's largest producer of platinum group metals, is counting on China's shift to hydrogen-powered freight trucks to create a substantial new market for its products. An executive explained that the metals act as catalysts in fuel-cell systems that drive electric vehicles, and the company projects an extra 6 million ounces of platinum and sister metals annually if it secures roughly 20 % of the worldwide heavy-duty truck segment for fuel-cell models.
That amount matches an entire year of global mine supply of the metal traditionally used in catalytic converters. For South Africa, which provides over 80 % of global platinum, the bet links future export earnings and jobs to Beijing's policy goals outlined in its 15th five-year plan, emphasizing energy security and hydrogen rollout. China is already deploying fuel-cell truck fleets near low-cost production hubs in the Yangtze River Delta and testing "tank-swapping" stations to cut distribution costs. Valterra's outlook reflects confidence that these initiatives will translate into sustained demand growth for platinum group metals.
Why it matters
The forecast connects South Africa's platinum sector and jobs to China's hydrogen-truck rollout, influencing global metal markets.
