Valve's Steam Frame VR Headset Arrives Over $1,000 Yet Lags Behind Competitors
Valve released the Steam Frame, a standalone VR headset priced at $1,059, but its high cost and limited content make it a tough sell.
Valve's new Steam Frame is a lightweight, standalone headset that mirrors the Valve Index in design but drops the external cable. It features high-resolution LCD pancake lenses, eye-tracking for foveated rendering, and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU with 16 GB of RAM, available with 256 GB or 1 TB of storage. Priced at $1,059, it competes with Meta's Quest line, which costs as low as $350 for comparable experiences.
While it runs classic Steam VR games smoothly and supports wireless PC streaming via a dedicated 6 GHz dongle, the VR library remains thin and few new titles are launching. Battery life ranges from under 90 minutes for demanding games to two hours for lighter use, and the built-in speakers lack bass. Overall, the headset delivers solid performance but its price and timing limit its market relevance.
