Vance says he and Trump plotted a Senate floor takeover to pass SAVE America Act

Vice President JD Vance told interviewer Vince Coglianese that he and President Donald Trump have "obsessively" rehearsed a strategy to commandeer the Senate floor, dismiss the parliamentarian and rely on the Vice President’s tie-breaking vote to pass the SAVE America Act and dismantle the filibuster. Vance described a scenario where he would assume the chair, fire the parliamentarian and count on a coalition of four or five Republicans—specifically Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, Tom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski—joining the 47 Democrats to reach the 50-vote threshold.

He noted that several Republican senators already vote more with Democrats, but the plan was deemed unworkable and set aside. The legislation has been deadlocked for months, and Trump has publicly urged five holdout Republicans, including Susan Collins and Bill Cassidy, to support it. A June lunch on Capitol Hill between Trump and Senate Republicans reportedly worsened the situation, and a White House official said the administration continues to explore every avenue to advance the bill.
