Vanilla Flavor Additive in Vapes May Disrupt Early Human Embryo Development, Study Finds
Laboratory experiments indicate that vanillin, a common vanilla flavor in e-cigarettes, can impair the pluripotency of human embryonic stem cells and bias them toward endoderm formation, raising concerns for pregnant vapers.
A research team led by Prue Talbot at the University of California-Riverside examined the impact of vanillin, a widely used vanilla flavoring in e-cigarette fluids, on early human development. Human embryonic stem cells, which model the embryo at roughly three weeks, were treated with nanomolar and micromolar concentrations of the chemical. Micromolar exposure killed the cells, whereas nanomolar levels caused loss of pluripotency and a shift toward endodermal differentiation.
The investigators identified the TRPV4 ion channel as the conduit for vanillin-induced calcium influx, and blocking this channel prevented the adverse effects. Published in Human Reproduction, the study suggests a mechanistic link between vaping, reduced fertility and miscarriage, though it does not prove the same outcomes occur in pregnant women. The authors urge caution for pregnant individuals who vape and recommend that regulators require clearer ingredient labeling on e-cigarette products.
