Vaping and alcohol use spreading among early teens in Romerike, officials warn parents

Local youth workers and police say vaping and drinking are becoming common among children as young as 12 in Romerike, urging parents to intervene early.

Youth outreach workers in Ullensaker say vaping and alcohol are now everyday habits for a growing number of early teens in the Romerike region, with some users as young as fifth-grade students. They observe that most obtain e-cigarettes and alcohol via Snapchat, social-media platforms, friends, or older siblings, and that use occurs at home, schools and public spaces such as train stations. Police confirm vaping is the most prevalent substance, often introduced around age 13, and some youths claim they need it to sleep.

Child-welfare psychologists recommend parents avoid lecturing, instead establishing clear boundaries, monitoring peer groups, and discussing risks before problems arise. Coordinated parental effort and community support are urged to counter peer pressure and potential progression to stronger drugs.

Why it matters

Early substance use can lead to long-term health risks and escalation to harder drugs, affecting families and communities.
