Vaping and cannabis use reach record levels among U.S. young adults in 2025
A new national survey shows that 19% of young adults used nicotine vapes and 29% used cannabis in the past 30 days, both at historic highs.
Data from a large national study conducted by the University of Michigan reveal that 19% of young adults reported vaping nicotine in the past 30 days, more than tripling since the question was added in 2017. Cannabis use w. Alcohol remains the most prevalent substance, with about 60% of young adults reporting drinking, yet overall alcohol use continues to decline.
Cigarette smoking fell to 8%, while nicotine-pouch usage more than doubled to 13% over the previous year. The survey also recorded a slight rise in heroin use from 0.2% to 0.6% and a drop in psychedelic use from 9% to 7%. Experts highlighted the need for continued monitoring and targeted public-health interventions.
