Vast Pacific floating debris zone spans 1.6 million km², dominated by fishing gear
Scientists estimate a rotating garbage patch covering about 1.6 million square kilometres between Hawaii and California, with most of its mass coming from abandoned fishing equipment.
Research published in 2018 estimated that a floating, rotating garbage accumulation stretches over 1.6 million km² between the Hawaiian archipelago and the California coast, an area larger than Pará and nearly three times metropolitan France. The study, which merged 652 surface tows, satellite imagery and circulation models, identified roughly 1.8 trillion plastic fragments, weighing close to 79 000 tons, with five Pacific fishing nations supplying most marked items.
Micro-plastics dominate numerically but contribute little to total mass, whereas larger debris, especially fishing nets, lines and ropes, account for the bulk of weight; a 2022 survey found 75-86 % of such mass originates from abandoned gear. Marine life faces ingestion risks and ghost-fishing hazards, affecting over 700 species. Recent modeling suggests annual growth of 1-3 % for plastics larger than 1.5 cm, and cleanup missions between 2021 and 2024 have extracted roughly 504 tons, yet the research concludes that without cutting new inputs, removal efforts will remain insufficient.
