Vaxcyte's experimental vaccine meets Phase 3 goals, challenging Pfizer and Merck
Vaxcyte announced that its experimental pneumococcal vaccine achieved primary endpoints in a Phase 3 trial, positioning it to compete with Pfizer's Prevnar and Merck's Capvaxive.
The California biotech reported that its candidate, VAX-31, successfully met the trial's primary objectives. The study involved over 3,500 adults aged 50 and older who were randomly assigned to receive VAX-31, Prevnar, or Capvaxive. Researchers evaluated antibody responses against multiple bacterial strains. VAX-31 targets 31 serotypes, exceeding the coverage of the rival shots. This result could reshape the pneumococcal vaccine market.
Why it matters
A broader, effective pneumococcal vaccine could improve disease prevention and increase competition in a major market.
