VC leader outlines four founder qualities he values most

Nicolas Sauvage, the founder and president of venture capital firm TDK Ventures, warned entrepreneurs against using fear-of-missing-out tactics when seeking funding. The firm, launched in 2019 with $500 million under management, follows a deliberate “deep exploration” of a sector before committing capital, constantly questioning its own assumptions. Sauvage identified four core founder attributes: first-principles thinking, the capacity to magnetically draw and align people, a unique super-power such as specialized knowledge or insight, and superior writing skills to scale communication.

He noted that while verbal charisma matters early on, clear written communication becomes critical as teams grow beyond ten members. In a recent blog, Sauvage also explored how AI can augment decision-making without replacing human accountability. These criteria guide TDK Ventures’ investments in deep-tech startups.
