Vegetation fire on Walter Peak forces evacuations and cancels tourist tours
A vegetation blaze on Walter Peak near Queenstown prompted the evacuation of guests and staff and led to the cancellation of scheduled tours.
Firefighters are tackling a vegetation fire on Walter Peak that has generated a large smoke plume over Lake Wakatipu. As a safety measure, guests, contractors and employees have been moved to an amphitheatre while the area is being dampened. The 1 pm and 3 pm Walter Peak experiences have been called off, and helicopters equipped with monsoon buckets are being used to suppress the flames.

The fire disrupts tourism in a key New Zealand destination and highlights the need for rapid emergency response.
