Ventura County euthanizes dog deemed dangerous after prolonged legal fight

Ventura County Animal Services euthanized Bruce, a three-year-old German shepherd mix, following a series of alleged attacks that left four people injured, including a 16-year-old teen. The county had labeled the dog dangerous after an administrative hearing in March, citing incidents from February 2024 through early 2025. Owners Claire M. Birgy and Erick Krasnoff, along with the Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center, filed successive appeals, but four judges either upheld the euthanasia order or refused to intervene.
A federal judge initially granted a stay, which was later lifted, and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the rescue group's request for a delay. The county announced the dog was put down humanely on Wednesday evening, emphasizing the need to balance animal compassion with public safety.
