Vera C. Rubin Observatory begins operations, unveiling unprecedented sky survey data
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile started official operations on June 30, already detecting numerous new asteroids, near-Earth objects and a massive collection of galaxies.
Although the formal inauguration was on June 30, the telescope had already begun scanning the sky, revealing a wealth of previously unknown asteroids and several objects that pass close to Earth. It also captured an extraordinary number of galaxies in a single exposure. The instrument’s design allows it to sweep the heavens systematically rather than focusing on a single target. Hundreds of servers at the summit process the incoming data, delivering updates on celestial events within a minute.
Why it matters
The observatory’s rapid, wide-field surveys will dramatically expand knowledge of near-Earth objects and the distant universe.
