Verstappen’s resurgence could upset Mercedes’ Antonelli-Russell title duel in 2026

With eight races left, Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell lead the 2026 championship, but Max Verstappen and an upgraded Red Bull may still interfere.

The 2026 Formula 1 title race has narrowed to Mercedes teammates Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, with Antonelli leading by 66 points as the Bahrain Grand Prix approaches in Malaysia. Red Bull, still winless this year, unveiled a new floor, diffuser and sidepods in Baku, boosting Max Verstappen’s podium count to seven and putting him back in contention to disrupt the championship. Verstappen’s proven skill in wet conditions and willingness to take risks on opening laps could challenge the Mercedes drivers, especially if Red Bull’s tyre wear improves.

Mercedes intends to roll out a major upgrade package at the Sepang International Circuit, aiming to dominate the final third of the season. Upcoming races at Las Vegas and high-altitude Mexico City will further test the effectiveness of both teams’ upgrades and strategies.
