Veteran Academy Executive Bruce Davis Dies at 83 After Long Career in Hollywood

Bruce Davis, aged 83, passed away on Saturday evening after a fight with leukemia, ending a distinguished tenure at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He spent three decades with the Academy, 22 of them as chief executive, overseeing daily operations across six presidential terms and expanding staff from 75 to 200. His initiatives included moving the Margaret Herrick Library to the Beverly Hills Waterworks Building in 1991 and establishing the film archive at the Pickford Center in 2002.

After announcing his retirement in 2010, he handed the role to Dawn Hudson, who led the organization until 2022. In retirement, Davis continued research at the Pickford Center, contributing to a 2022 Brandeis University Press history of the Academy. He is survived by his wife Joann and daughters Brangien, Alexandra, Archer and Roxanne.
