Veteran cornerback Sam Webb retires after brief stint with the Giants
Sam Webb, a 28-year-old NFL defensive back, was placed on the Giants’ Reserve/Retired List after playing just one preseason snap.
The New York Giants added cornerback Sam Webb to their roster on Thursday, giving him a single practice before his lone preseason appearance versus the Minnesota Vikings. After the game, the Giants placed Webb on the Reserve/Retired List, signaling his retirement from the league at age 28. Webb entered the NFL after a standout tenure at Missouri Western State, first signing with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, where he logged 36 tackles and three pass break-ups over 17 games.
He later spent a season with the Carolina Panthers, returned to the Raiders for an 11-game stretch, and played for the Cleveland Browns in 2025, recording eight tackles and a fumble return for a touchdown. Prior to the Giants signing, Webb had been released by the Denver Broncos five days earlier. New York hopes the move, along with the recent addition of Greg Newsome II, will improve a secondary that ranked 16th in pass defense last season.
Why it matters
The sudden retirement of a veteran defensive back highlights roster volatility and the Giants' efforts to revamp a struggling secondary.
