Veteran filmmaker John Irvin passes away at 86

Director John Irvin died at age 86, with his producer saying he died peacefully at home last week.

John Irvin, the British director celebrated for a half-century of film and television work, died at 86. Producer Claire Evans said he died peacefully at his residence on August 11, without revealing a cause of death. Irvin earned three BAFTA nominations and directed notable titles such as The Dogs of War with Christopher Walken and the 1979 adaptation of John le Carré’s Tinker Tailor, Soldier, Spy starring Alec Guinness, which garnered BAFTA and Emmy nods.

His Vietnam War picture Hamburger Hill is regarded as one of the most authentic portrayals of the conflict. After filming a documentary on Yemen’s civil war, MI6 approached him, but he declined, citing his left-wing activism. Irvin is survived by three children and two grandchildren.
