Veteran game designer Warren Spector announces retirement from development
Warren Spector, celebrated creator of the Deus Ex series, has declared he is stepping away from game development.
Warren Spector, widely regarded as a founding figure of immersive-simulation games, used a LinkedIn post to confirm his retirement after nearly half a century in the field. He highlighted his work on titles such as Deus Ex, several Ultima entries, Disney's Epic Mickey and the recent stealth-action game Thick as Thieves. Citing one outlet and health concerns, Spector said he will devote his time to authoring books, reading, lecturing and possibly consulting, while still dreaming of three future projects.
He also mentioned that the industry's evolution has reduced his enjoyment of the development process. Earlier attempts to retire had not stuck, but he believes this decision is final.
Why it matters
