Veteran of 1999 Kargil conflict tries to end his life after 24-year land promise stalls

Retired army veteran Shivananda Reddy, who fought with the Maratha Light Infantry during the 1999 Kargil war and sustained injuries, has been waiting more than two decades for a land allotment in his hometown of Chintamani, Karnataka. The state had pledged the parcel as recognition of his service, but the promised plot never materialised. On August 29, Reddy attempted to approach Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara in Bengaluru to request intervention, but senior police officers barred his access.

Feeling trapped by the endless postponement, he allegedly tried to end his life. He was rescued and is currently being treated at a private medical facility. The incident highlights the lingering grievances of war veterans over unfulfilled government commitments.
