VHP urges Hindu-only participation at Maharashtra Navratri garba and dandiya events

The Vishva Hindu Parishad has told organisers of garba and dandiya celebrations in Maharashtra to bar Muslims, recommending ID checks and tilak markings for attendees.

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has issued a directive to bar Muslim participation in garba and dandiya gatherings across Maharashtra as the Navratri festivities approach on October 11. VHP joint secretary Shriraj Nair told reporters that event organisers must confirm one outlet identity of each participant, recommending the inspection of Aadhar cards and the application of a tilak on the forehead at entry. While presenting the measure as a precautionary step rather than a direct targeting of any community, Nair questioned why the VHP should relax its rules for those who do not share the festival’s religious beliefs.

He added that Muslims wishing to celebrate should organise events within mosques or private residences. The announcement comes weeks after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat called for social and religious harmony worldwide. The VHP maintains that protecting the cultural integrity of Hindu festivals is essential, even as it claims the guidelines are not aimed at any specific group.
