Victor Ponta accuses Romania of diplomatic isolation likened to North Korea

Victor Ponta used his online platform to launch a sharp attack on Romania’s current foreign-policy direction, claiming it isolates the country by concentrating only on the European Union. He pointed to the recent BRICS summit in New Delhi as an example of a major geopolitical forum that Romania ignored, despite the bloc representing 24 states that together hold a substantial portion of the planet’s population and economic output.

Ponta contrasted these figures with the EU’s comparatively modest share, arguing that the country is missing out on vital diplomatic and economic opportunities. He defended the decision to cut direct ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin but rejected any blanket boycott of international events simply because Putin attends. Citing leaders such as Donald Trump and various European heads of state who continue to engage with China, India, Brazil and other non-Western powers, Ponta warned that Romania risks remaining “frozen” if it refuses to look beyond its borders.
