Victorian Coalition vows to keep Latrobe Valley coal plants operating if elected
The Victorian Coalition announced it will not accelerate the shutdown of existing coal-fired power stations in the Latrobe Valley, pledging to keep them running until their planned retirement dates.
Facing the upcoming state election, the Victorian Coalition declared it will not hasten the phase-out of coal-fired generators in the Latrobe Valley, arguing that existing plants are needed for reliable baseload power. National Party MP Martin Cameron pointed to Victorian Auditor-General alerts that the state could face supply gaps when Yallourn shuts down in 2028, and he dismissed any plan to bring forward closures of Loy Yang A, Loy Yang B or other units.
EnergyAustralia reiterated that Yallourn will close as scheduled at the end of June 2028 and is developing a mixed-use precinct with gas, battery storage and data-centre projects. Alinta Energy confirmed Loy Yang A’s 2035 retirement remains unchanged, while a date for Loy Yang B has not been set. The Victorian government maintains that renewable energy is the most cost-effective replacement and cites recent growth in renewable generation, though experts warn that the loss of coal capacity could create shortfalls.
