Vienna Airport sees passenger drop in September amid low-cost cuts and Middle East tensions
Vienna Airport reported a decline in September passenger numbers, attributing the fall to reduced low-cost flights and cancelled routes linked to the Middle East crisis.
In September, Vienna Airport’s Schwechat location experienced a reduction in passenger traffic, which the operator linked to a diminished low-cost schedule and route suspensions related to the Middle East crisis. Across the entire Vienna Airport Group, total passenger movements edged down modestly, even as cargo handling increased by nearly ten percent. The decline was most pronounced among local travelers and transfer passengers, while flight movements fell by over six percent.
Conversely, the group’s overseas assets reported growth, with Malta seeing a double-digit rise and Kosice achieving a substantial increase in passenger counts. Year-to-date figures show a slight overall dip in the group’s traffic compared with the same period last year.
Why it matters
The downturn highlights how geopolitical tensions and airline strategies can quickly affect major European hub traffic.
