Vienna to enforce strict checks on e-mopeds under new regulations
Vienna's traffic office and police will jointly monitor compliance with new e-moped rules that ban them from bike paths and require registration, licensing and helmets.
Vienna is set to enforce a new regulatory framework for e-mopeds, with the municipal Office for Immediate Measures collaborating with police to oversee adherence. Effective in October, the rules bar e-mopeds from bike lanes and mandate road registration, licence plates, insurance, a valid driving licence for operators and compulsory helmet use. Traffic councilor Ulli Sima welcomed the ban, citing safety concerns for cyclists and pedestrians.
Police president Gerhard Pürstl announced that officers will halt non-compliant rides and file reports, with fines determined by the nature of each breach. Walter Hillerer, leader of the Immediate Measures team, confirmed intensive spot checks, including scrutiny of whether cyclists are being used as alternative routes. The measures target the many delivery riders who currently use unregistered e-mopeds, which may become unusable without meeting the new standards.
