Vietnam Airlines 787 experiences brake activation and tail strike during Munich take-off

An interim report from the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation shows that a Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 bound for Hanoi activated its left-hand brakes twice while accelerating down Munich’s runway in August. The aircraft could not achieve the needed speed before the runway terminated, leading the co-pilot to increase engine power and become airborne beyond the paved area. The tail struck the ground and the main-gear wheels hit approach lights, heavily damaging the airframe.

After dumping 62 metric tons of fuel, the crew reported a suspected flat tyre and performed an emergency landing back at Munich. No passengers or crew were injured, and the investigation remains ongoing.
