Vietnamese couple arrested in Bangkok for orchestrating Hanoi acid assault
Thai immigration police captured a 46-year-old man and his 44-year-old wife in Bangkok after Vietnam requested their detention for an acid attack in Hanoi.
Thai immigration officials detained a 46-year-old man and his 44-year-old wife in Bangkok after Vietnam asked for their capture. The couple had fled Vietnam following an acid attack at a Hanoi outdoor restaurant on July 25, 2025, where the woman enticed the victim and the husband, posing as a food delivery driver, sprayed acid on the victim's face and body, inflicting severe injuries. Vietnamese investigators believe the attack was pre-planned and that a third individual who commissioned it is still missing.
The suspects, speaking through an interpreter, confessed to carrying out the assault and said they were hired by a fellow Vietnamese. Police revoked their Thai residency permits and are coordinating with Vietnamese authorities to pursue the remaining suspect.
Why it matters
The arrest highlights cross-border cooperation against transnational violent crime.
