Viggo Kristiansen files lawsuit against the state over alleged wrongful conviction
Viggo Kristiansen has sued the Justice Ministry, seeking additional compensation beyond the settlement he previously received for the Baneheia miscarriage of justice.
After serving almost 21 years for the Baneheia killings, Viggo Kristiansen was cleared of all charges in December 2022. He later obtained a compensation payment from the state, but his legal team argues that the amount does not fully cover the injustice he endured. Consequently, Kristiansen has lodged a lawsuit against the Justice and Preparedness Department, requesting additional restitution.
The claim has been filed with Agder District Court, and his attorney emphasizes the need for a rapid settlement. Kristiansen, represented by Carl Aasland Jerstad, also seeks reimbursement for costs incurred from earlier lawsuits filed by former associates. The lawsuit underscores the ongoing repercussions of the case for both Kristiansen and the victims' families.
Why it matters
The suit highlights ongoing challenges in compensating victims of wrongful convictions and the state's responsibility to address past judicial errors.
