Vijay Mallya claims legal travel ban while contesting fugitive status
Vijay Mallya says he cannot leave the UK due to a legal restriction and is fighting his designation as a fugitive in court.
In a series of X posts, Vijay Mallya asserted that a legal injunction prevents him from departing the United Kingdom, countering accusations that he is avoiding India. He highlighted an Enforcement Directorate affidavit filed in the Bombay High Court, which records a recovered amount of Rs 14,131.60 crore against a larger judgment debt. Mallya also presented a table alleging that the ED had released over Rs 350 crore for Kingfisher employees, but his assets remain attached.
The Bombay High Court previously reprimanded him for deliberately avoiding proceedings and gave him a final opportunity to state his intention to return. Currently, a bench headed by Chief Justice Chandrashekhar is reviewing his petition that challenges the constitutional validity of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act and his fugitive declaration, indicating that continued evasion could bar any equitable relief.
