Vikings name Kyler Murray starter over rookie J.J. McCarthy

A source familiar with the decision told one outlet that the Minnesota Vikings will go with Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback, bypassing J.J. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft. Coach Kevin O’Connell emphasized that a true contest for the role will be held, giving both Murray and McCarthy ample opportunities in open practices.

Murray, who spent his first seven NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, will need to learn a new offensive scheme, making an early starter designation advantageous. McCarthy, who struggled in limited action last season due to injuries, will continue to compete for snaps. In addition, the Vikings re-signed veteran quarterback Carson Wentz to provide experienced backup support.
