Vingroup plans $500 million electric vehicle plant in the Philippines
Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup announced a $500 million investment to build an EV manufacturing facility in the Philippines, targeting both local sales and exports.
Vingroup, the parent of EV brand VinFast, disclosed plans to invest $500 million in a new electric-vehicle factory in the Philippines, aiming to serve domestic demand and export markets. The facility is designed for an initial output of 200,000 cars annually, with groundbreaking expected in early 2027 and a construction timeline of up to a year and a half. Alongside the car plant, the group will introduce its line of electric scooters.
The Department of Trade and Industry, led by Trade Secretary Cristina Roque, pledged full support and described the investment as evidence of the country's growing appeal for high-tech and sustainable manufacturing. Discussions also touched on Vingroup’s broader interest in the Philippines, including potential projects in entertainment, theme parks, and healthcare through its Vinpearl and Vinmec subsidiaries. The company may consider participation in the government’s Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy, though program rules are still being finalized.
Why it matters
The project could boost Philippine manufacturing jobs and position the country as a regional hub for electric vehicles.
