Violence at German Cup clash leaves 35 police officers hurt and fans detained
A German Cup match between Waldhof Mannheim and Kaiserslautern turned violent, injuring 35 police officers and leading to several fan arrests.
Thirty-five police officers sustained minor injuries during a disturbance at the German Cup game between Waldhof Mannheim and Kaiserslautern, held at Carl-Benz Stadium. The sold-out match attracted around 23,500 fans, including roughly 3,500 visitors, and was marked by repeated use of pyrotechnics. After a scoreless 90 minutes, a confrontation on the field escalated when Kaiserslautern fans fired fireworks into a seating area, leading Mannheim supporters to storm the pitch.
Police intervened, and eight spectators were taken to hospital while a total of 85 people needed medical attention. Firefighters extinguished a fire started in the away section, and investigators are pursuing charges ranging from assault to violations of explosives laws.
