Virgin unveils design for 2030 cross-Channel service to rival Eurostar
Virgin has displayed a mock-up of its planned London-to-Europe high-speed train, aiming to start service in 2030 and challenge Eurostar.
Virgin revealed a full-scale mock-up of the train it intends to run between London and continental Europe, targeting a 2030 launch that would give Eurostar its first direct competitor. Twelve trainsets have been ordered from Alstom, and the design will draw on the brand’s airline, cruise and hotel divisions, featuring lounge-style pre-departure areas, flexible work zones and premium food service. Josh Bayliss, chief executive of Virgin Group, highlighted the project’s aim to boost rail capacity and attract more passengers to train travel across the UK and Europe.
The Office of Rail and Road confirmed track access through 2040 and a maintenance agreement at the Temple Mills international depot. Meanwhile, Italy’s state-owned Trenitalia is also planning high-speed services through the Channel, having placed a €2 billion order with Hitachi for additional trains.
Why it matters
Virgin's entry could increase competition, lower prices and expand rail capacity between the UK and Europe.
