Virginia clergy rally against two constitutional amendment proposals

An open pastoral letter circulating among Virginia clergy has gathered more than 200 signatures and calls for a unified rejection of two constitutional amendments slated for the November ballot. The signatories contend that Ballot Question 1, which would embed abortion rights in the state constitution, and Ballot Question 2, which seeks to remove the ban on same-sex marriage, run contrary to human flourishing and biblical principles.

Pastor Ben Purves of Occoquan Bible Church highlighted the importance of a single clerical voice and noted that the letter’s reach could expand if laypeople were allowed to sign. The initiative echoes a high-profile “Catholics Vote No” drive organized by Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington and Bishop Barry Knestout of Richmond, who previously issued a joint statement opposing the measures. While the letter currently targets clergy, organizers verify signers’ credentials and urge pastors to distribute it within their churches. Early voting has begun ahead of the Nov. 3 election, with registration open until Oct. 23.
