Virginia Governor Ends Transgender Sports Rule, Sparks Parental Outcry

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger's team terminated a rulemaking effort that would have mandated sex-based divisions in school athletics and restricted biological males from accessing female-only facilities. The initiative, begun during Governor Glenn Youngkin's tenure and supported by the Virginia Board of Health, was expected to take years but was quietly dropped in late July, with no announcement from the governor's office.

Parents and Republican legislators, such as former delegate Kim Taylor and delegate Wren Williams, expressed fury, saying the move undermines the privacy and fairness owed to female students. State Rep. Michelle Davis added that the decision reverses progress for women’s sports. Virginia Health Commissioner Cameron Webb confirmed the regulation would not proceed, while the Youngkin-appointed chair of the State Board of Health said she was unaware the process had ended.
