Virginia man sentenced to 15 years for cat torture and online fraud
Rodney Travis Jr. received a 15-year prison term, the longest animal-abuse sentence in Virginia, after pleading guilty to torturing cats and running a social-media fraud.
In Henrico County, Virginia, Rodney Travis Jr., 27, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars after admitting to a series of animal-abuse and computer-fraud offenses. Prosecutors said he beat and maimed almost 20 cats, then uploaded videos to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube that depicted the animals as suffering from cancer to elicit charitable donations, raising over $400,000 since 2023. A search of his apartment uncovered blood-stained cat beds, a leather book containing cat blood and fur, and devices used for the fraud; investigators rescued six cats, five of which survived, while a cat named Vivi died en route to a veterinarian.
The investigation was sparked by tips from citizen investigators in multiple countries and led to additional guilty pleas in Chesterfield County, where his father also faced lesser charges. Prosecutors highlighted the cruelty and financial motive, calling the sentence the harshest ever imposed for animal abuse in the state.
