Virginia voters face a ballot measure that could allow abortions up to birth and end parental consent

Virginia is holding a referendum on Amendment 1, which proposes to embed a broad right to reproductive freedom in the state constitution. Unlike current statutes, the amendment would allow abortions at any stage of pregnancy, including the third trimester and up to birth. It also seeks to abolish parental-consultation and consent rules for minors seeking abortions.

Supporters present the amendment as a necessary protection of individual liberty, whereas opponents describe it as an extreme and deceptive expansion of abortion access. The vote will take place from next week until Election Day, determining whether the amendment becomes part of Virginia’s constitution.
