Visa cleared to start setting up domestic card clearing in China
Visa Inc. has received regulatory approval to begin preparations for a domestic bank-card clearing operation in China, marking a step toward entering the country's large payments market.
Visa Inc. secured official clearance from the People's Bank of China to commence preparations for a domestic bank-card clearing service, positioning the company to potentially join Mastercard and American Express in China’s expansive payments arena. The firm described the decision as an "important milestone" and expressed gratitude to leaders of both the United States and China for maintaining a constructive bilateral relationship.
CEO Ryan McInerney, who accompanied President Donald Trump on a May trip to Beijing, said Visa has contributed to China’s payments ecosystem for more than 40 years and will now follow PBOC rules to move forward. Mastercard received similar approval in 2020, while American Express’s joint venture was cleared shortly thereafter. Visa’s next steps involve detailed planning and compliance work to eventually offer domestic card-clearing services within the Chinese market.
Why it matters
Visa’s entry into China’s domestic payments system could reshape competition and expand consumer options in the world’s biggest card market.
