Voice-phishing fraud detections at South Korea’s top banks double in 2025

South Korean regulators reported that the five biggest banks confirmed 8,760 voice-phishing transactions as fraud in 2025, more than twice the number recorded in 2024.

The Financial Supervisory Service provided figures to Representative Park Seong-hoon indicating that South Korea’s five major commercial banks—KB Kookmin Bank, Shinhan Bank, Hana Bank, Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank—confirmed 8,760 voice-phishing transactions as fraud in 2025. This number more than doubled the 4,343 cases recorded in 2024. Their fraud detection systems flagged a total of 1.11 million potentially fraudulent voice-phishing attempts, up 39.9% from the previous year’s 796,000, and banks took temporary suspension actions against 157,000 transactions, compared with 125,000 in 2024.

The rise in detected scams follows a series of cyberattacks that leaked email addresses, names and phone numbers of roughly 100,000 individuals across the banking sector. Authorities and banks are therefore stepping up real-time monitoring and security measures to protect consumers and reduce financial losses.

Why it matters

The sharp increase in confirmed voice-phishing fraud highlights growing cyber-risk for consumers and pressures banks to strengthen security.
