Volkswagen limits charging capacity on select ID.4 EVs in Norway due to fire risk
Volkswagen has notified owners of certain ID.4 electric cars in Norway that the vehicles’ charging capacity will be temporarily reduced because of a potential fire hazard in the battery.
Volkswagen has sent letters to owners of ID.4 electric vehicles in Norway informing them that, for safety reasons, the cars’ charging capability will be temporarily capped at a lower level. The decision follows the discovery of a battery issue that could lead to overheating and fire when the battery is charged to its full capacity. The recall targets a specific group of models built between 2022 and 2024, and the limitation will be applied via the vehicle’s software, provided the hardware allows it.
Volkswagen Norway confirmed that the affected owners will also be notified through the company’s app. The company emphasizes that the vehicles can still be driven normally and that the reduced charging is a short-term measure until a permanent solution is implemented.
Why it matters
The restriction affects EV owners’ range and highlights safety challenges in electric-vehicle battery design.
