Volkswagen outlines phased shutdown of four German factories and relocation of key models
Volkswagen plans to cease vehicle production at four German sites between 2031 and 2034, moving the next-generation Audi Q4 e-tron to Bratislava while other models shift to locations in the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany.
Volkswagen’s executive board has released a detailed schedule to wind down manufacturing at four German factories: Emden and Zwickau by 2031, Hannover by 2032, and Audi’s Neckarsulm plant by 2034. Rather than immediate closures, current models will be phased out and new electric models reassigned to other sites. The upcoming Audi Q4 e-tron will be produced in Bratislava, Slovakia, while the next ID.4 successor will shift to Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic.
Additional capacity from Hannover is slated for Poznań, Poland, and the future Audi A8 replacement will be built in Leipzig, Germany. The supervisory board is set to debate the proposal on 3-4 September, after the board unanimously approved the overall concept. Volkswagen has not commented on the supervisory board’s documents.
