Volkswagen weighs adopting Chinese-market software for future European models

Volkswagen is evaluating the use of its China-specific software platform for upcoming cars in Europe, potentially affecting Volkswagen, Škoda and Cupra models.

Volkswagen is exploring the adoption of the software architecture it uses for Chinese-market cars in its upcoming European lineup. The China Electronic Architecture, created together with Chinese automaker Xpeng, may replace the separate software solutions currently employed for China and the West. Thomas Schäfer, chief of the Volkswagen brand, is set to present the proposal to the group’s leadership.

If approved, the new platform could be implemented across a substantial portion of the next-generation models from Volkswagen, Škoda and Cupra, which are expanding their electric offerings in Europe. The move would reduce reliance on the existing collaboration with U.S. firm Rivian, which supplies software for Western markets. Volkswagen declined to comment, and the information was reported.

Why it matters

The shift could reshape Volkswagen's software strategy and affect its competitive position in Europe’s growing electric-vehicle market.
