Volvo revives XC40 plug-in hybrid with fresh design and Gemini AI features

Volvo Cars confirmed that the XC40 plug-in hybrid will return after a three-year hiatus, arriving at showrooms early next year with a comprehensive redesign. The facelift updates the front and rear styling, including new Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, refreshed grille, bumpers and a selection of diamond-cut wheels in 18-, 19- and 20-inch sizes. Inside, the cabin receives a larger 11.2-inch high-resolution display, a faster user interface and Google’s Gemini AI assistant to handle navigation, messaging and route planning.

Safety is bolstered by a new sensor platform comprising additional radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors, enabling features like automated emergency steering and cyclist-aware door alerts. Volvo did not reveal details on the hybrid’s engine, electric motor, battery capacity or electric range. Interim Lead Akhil Krishnan said the upgrades are intended to keep the XC40 among Volvo’s best-selling models for years to come.
