Waiter tackles armed ex-husband, averting shooting at Toledo restaurant
A Toledo waiter intervened when disgraced lawyer Matthew Exton pointed a loaded handgun at his ex-wife inside the Sabira restaurant, preventing a fatal shooting.
On April 11, 2025, at the Italian-style eatery Sabira in Toledo, Ohio, former criminal-defense attorney Matthew Exton entered the dining room and brandished a handgun at his ex-wife, who was seated with family. The gun, loaded with a round in the chamber and seven in the magazine, did not discharge because the safety was on, prompting Exton to struggle with the weapon. Waiter Tracy Cole, Jr. charged the scene, tackled Exton and kept him restrained until authorities arrived.
Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates described the incident as a premeditated attempt at a public execution. Exton was found guilty of attempted murder and two felonious assault charges, and his law license was suspended earlier that year.
