Wales faces call for dedicated men's health strategy as premature deaths rise

A Movember report shows a third of Welsh men die before 75, prompting calls for a specific men’s health plan.

Movember’s latest study reveals that about one-third of men in Wales die before reaching 75, with almost 7,000 premature deaths recorded in 2024, compared with a much lower rate for women. The report attributes the gap to men’s reluctance to seek care, higher rates of preventable diseases, and socioeconomic differences, noting that mortality in Blaenau Gwent is roughly 60% higher than in Powys. Advocates, including former cancer survivor Ben Lidgey and professor Jonathan Scourfield, urge the Welsh government to craft a dedicated men’s health strategy, complementing the 2024 women’s plan.

Officials argue current suicide-prevention, mental-health and cancer initiatives already target the problem. Community initiatives like MenTribe, founded by Callum Tipton, are cited as effective grassroots models for building resilience and encouraging early help-seeking.

Why it matters

High premature male mortality in Wales signals a public-health gap that could affect families and the economy.
