Wales' First Minister seeks expanded devolution and new powers from Westminster

First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has asked Prime Minister Andy Burnham for a new devolution deal, targeting greater control over policing, justice, rail and the Crown Estate.

Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has formally requested a "new deal" with Prime Minister Andy Burnham, seeking additional devolved powers over policing, justice, rail transport and the Crown Estate. Speaking on one outlet Breakfast, he said Wales is prepared for the next phase of devolution, noting the Assembly's 27-year history and the Senedd's full law-making powers for 12 years. His proposal includes a more equitable funding formula, greater fiscal flexibility, and control of key infrastructure to improve public services.

Although he remains a Plaid Cymru leader who backs independence, he stressed one outlet push is about equipping the Welsh Government with necessary tools, not launching an independence debate. He pointed to recent initiatives such as expanded childcare, free school meals, new bus routes and a £1bn farming support deal as early achievements, and urged the UK government to act before the next election.

Why it matters

The request could reshape the balance of power between Wales and the UK, affecting public services and fiscal policy.
