Wales health minister convenes meeting after gender-affirming surgery referrals are halted

Wales' health minister Mabon ap Gwynfor has called a Thursday meeting with the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee (NWJCC) to address the sudden halt of gender-affirming surgery referrals. The pause follows data showing referral rates in 2025-26 that were markedly higher than those in England, prompting the NWJCC to order an independent clinical review described as precautionary. Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, which operates the gender identity clinic, confirmed that some patients awaiting surgery were already admitted when the suspension was communicated.

Reform UK and the Welsh Conservatives praised the decision, whereas a letter signed by most Plaid Cymru backbench Senedd members voiced deep concern for the trans community. Health minister ap Gwynfor said he seeks details on the review’s duration, format, and reassurance that services remain reliable for those in need.
