Wales' nonagenarian celebrates 107th birthday with fish-and-chips advice
Owen Filer, believed to be Wales' oldest man, marked his 107th birthday and urged a simple fish-and-chips diet for longevity.
Owen Filer, who was born in 1919 and served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and the Military Police during World War II, is thought to be the oldest resident of Wales as he approaches his 107th birthday. He told reporters that there is no secret to his longevity beyond living properly and never overeating, noting that a regular meal of fish and chips sustained him. On Friday he received a commemorative shield from the armed-forces charity SSAFA and was joined by his 80-year-old daughter Anne Messore, along with ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Later, he was greeted with a red-carpet reception at the Market Hall Cinema in Brynmawr, where he watched the film "One Good Turn." Fellow veteran Darren Foote praised Filer's down-to-earth attitude and disciplined daily routine.
