Walker Corp proposes 30-storey tower in Maroochydore, sparking local opposition

Sydney-based Walker Corporation has submitted an application to the Queensland government for a 99-metre, 30-storey residential tower in Maroochydore’s emerging central business district, featuring 200 apartments and penthouses. Residents such as Peter Cowan and Jeff Spencer fear the building could set a precedent for taller structures across the Sunshine Coast, potentially altering the area’s beach-side lifestyle. Local activist Kate Harvey, who previously campaigned against light rail, supports growth but cautions against a Gold Coast-style skyline.

Business voices, including Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce president Brendan Bathersby, describe the tower as an iconic step in the region’s long-term development. Historical concerns were raised by Robyn Lister, whose great-grandfather donated the land for public use in the 1930s. Mayor Rosanna Natoli argues the project aligns with a pre-existing CBD plan and protects coastal and hinterland zones. Deputy Premier and Planning Minister Jarrod Bleijie noted the need for more housing while preserving the Sunshine Coast’s character, and Walker Corporation declined to comment.
